The Former Soviet Satellites Are Afraid

Ukraine offers satellite defence co-operation with Europe and US

Ukraine inflamed mounting East-West tensions yesterday by offering up a Soviet-built satellite facility as part of the European missile defence system.

With the news of the last week concerning the Russian invasion of Georgia, it is notable to see the response of other former Soviet satellites. They are afraid and the fear is palpable. Poland has signed their treaty with the US and missile defense on the heels of the Russian invasion. And now the Ukraine is indicating that they too are ready to be defended from the ghost of the Soviet bear.

Meanwhile the Russians have tentatively agreed to a ceasefire, but they are digging in and reinforcing their positions in South Ossetia and Abkhazia and the president and secretary of state have already noted, that the Russiaqns are already violating the treaty.
